  5. This is to announce NTeX 2.1.0 which is available under

  13. since the 29th of February '96. It should soon be available on
  14. sunsite.unc.edu and its mirrors in /pub/Linux/apps/tex/ntex and from
  15. CTAN - ftp.dante.de (Germany), ftp.shsu.edu (Texas, USA),
  16. ftp.tex.ac.uk (England) - in /tex-archive/systems/unix/linux/ntex.
  17. Also have a look at the script get_ntex in the NTeX root directory
  18. to simplify getting NTeX.

  20. The main differences between 2.0 and 2.1 are additional support for
  21. non-Linux systems, a new package format and lots of bug fixes and
  22. updates. The details are in the CHANGES file.

  24. If you are upgrading from NTeX 2.0.X, get the contents of the ntex
  25. subdirectory and the packages you want to install/upgrade. If you run
  26. InstallNTeX from the ntex subdirectory it will automatically upgrade
  27. your installation to 2.1.0. Read the file INSTALL for more details.
  28. Please note that the package format has changed between 2.0 and 2.1,
  29. so you can't install any of the packages which come with 2.1 with
  30. InstallNTeX from 2.0.X and vice versa!

  32. NTeX is a very complete TeX distribution for Linux. The distribution
  33. is grouped in package sets. For the basic installation you only need
  34. the files in the ntex and the base subdirectory. For further details
  35. about the packages read the file `INDEX' in the main directory. The
  36. installation information and some hints are in `INSTALL'. And of
  37. course you should have a look at `README.NTeX'. NTeX 2.1.0 is compiled
  38. under ELF (libc 5.3.9) and should also run on other UNIX systems
  39. (install as on Linux including the source packages and recompile or
  40. check out the systems subdirectory for binary archives for other
  41. architectures, you need the GNU tools, especially GNU tar and cpio for
  42. installation!).

  49. There are still a few bugs left, read the file BUGS for details. Currently 
  50. I don't have the time to fix them. I hope that this will change soon.

  52. TeX is a software system that was originally written by Donald Knuth
  53. to typeset texts. LaTeX is a set of macros for TeX written to simplify
  54. typesetting with TeX. There are a lot of other macros and style files,
  55. etc. which were designed for the same purpose. The NTeX distribution
  56. also include Metafont, a program which allows the user to design
  57. fonts. I tried to include a lot of macros and fonts into the NTeX
  58. distribution which could be installed for your needs. Also the basic
  59. configuration of TeX, etc. can be done with shell scripts and/or
  60. during installation time. The purpose of NTeX is to provide a
  61. distribution for TeX and the fronts, macros which could be easily
  62. installed and configured.

  67.            TeXInfo, MakeIndex, GloTeX, IdXTeX, XFig, TransFig, a few
  68.            additional tools, the formats Plain, LaTeX2e, AMSTeX, AMSLaTeX,
  69.            the CM and DC fonts, PostScript fonts

  71. Extras:    MetaPost, TeX--XeT, XLaTeX, XTem, XTeXShell, TiB, BibBview,
  72.            BibTool, the formats ETeX, PLFTeX, LaTeX2.09, MTeX, MusicTeX
